India reports 323,144 new coronavirus infections, marking the sixth consecutive day of more than 300,000 new cases within 24 hours. However, this also marks a slight decrease from the previous day, when health officials recorded a global high of 352,991 new infections for the fifth consecutive day. The number of deaths increased by 2,771 to 197,894.

Experts fear, however, that the actual figure is likely to be significantly higher. This is because numerous hospitals are overcrowded due to the severe second wave of coronavirus and are having to turn away Covid 19 patients due to a lack of free beds and oxygen for treatment.

Army mobilized
Meanwhile, in the fight against a faster-growing CoV wave, India called in the army to help. Chief of General Staff Bipin Rawat yesterday announced the deployment of retired military personnel to clinics. In addition, oxygen supplies would be released from army reserves. “Heaven and earth” would be set in motion, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan tweeted.

International aid announced
Several countries announced help, including Austria. Austria is currently in contact with the Indian authorities regarding offers of help and support in dealing with the epidemic there, said Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP).

India, with a population of around 1.35 billion, has more than 17.3 million confirmed infections, making it the second most infected country in the world after the United States (around 328 million inhabitants).
